can't use rpm -u

In the list I read that we're supposed to upgrade packages that fixes have
come out for. I thought I'd try it out with the updated rpm:

[root@kitch2 upgrades]# rpm -u rpm-2.2.7-1.i386.rpm 
error: -u and --uninstall are depricated and no longer work.
error: Use -e or --erase instead.


What should I do? rpm -i? rpm -e?
