I think I had this problem on another machine, can't remember the fix.

Basically, talk does not connect. I get the message [No connection yet]
and [Checking for invitation on caller's machine]. hostname -f returns 
the CNAME for the machine....

Aha!! OK, just fixed it myself. For the benefit of others:

I had the CNAME listed in /etc/hosts. Once I changed this to the A name 
(ie. not the alias) it worked fine. 

Live and learn, and re-learn.
