Sometimes the locking mechanism on elm breaks down.  A simple fix is this: 
cp /var/spool/mail/$LOGNAME /tmp 
rm /var/spool/mail/$LOGNAME
elm (it should come up now without any problems)
check to see that elm recreated the file /var/spool/mail/$LOGNAME
cat /tmp/$LOGNAME > /var/spool/mail/$LOGNAME

anways, that will take care of it
