Summary:
It appears that Sound Driver:3.5.4 is no longer capabale of doing
software configuration.
The gotcha:
Make sure whatever you compile into the kernel in terms of irq
addresses etc is exactly what you have in your hardware setup (jumpers)
My hardware was set to irq 5 but the software in the older Sound
Driver:3.5.2 was able to force it to use irq 7 (which is unused in my
system). My solution was to re-compile with irq set to five.
The easier way would have been to rejumper.
