I am almost there: installing a "magic filter".  The usual one is
called APSFILTER or something like that.  It's in the FAQs, HOWTOs,
and other such things.  The filter is installed via the printcap.
Once done you send the printer (lpr) the file.  Whether post-script
file, whatever, the "magic filter" massages the data (possibly via
Ghostscript), and gives the printer what it needs.
