I suggest you speak to your friends more. Portmon is something you =
definitely=20
do not want. I do not know what specific problems you are facing with =
getty,=20
but Redhat comes with it already set up, I certainly did not have to =
mess with=20
it in order to get a login prompt.
For your amusement, I am including the following excerpt from the file=20
/etc/init.d/inetsvc on a Sun (running Solaris):

# Run inetd in "standalone" mode (-s flag) so that it doesn't have
# to submit to the will of SAF. Why did we ever let them change inetd?
#
/usr/sbin/inetd -s
SAF (Service Access Facility) is a piece of monstrosity which portmon is =
a part=20
of.
