I just finished upgrading from 3.0.4 to 4.0, and now, neither root nor
anyone else can log in. It flashes ``Login failed'' (or whatever
it says) very quickly four times before it even asks for a password. This
is some kind of PAM thing, I know it, because I saw it when upgraded PAM
without the rest of 4.0 before I did the full upgrade. Before I was able
to fix it by restoring my old pam.conf, but this time, it got destroyed...

My /etc/pam.conf was a soft link to /etc/pam.conf.rpmsave, which I
realize now was a bad idea. Rpm helpfully moved the link, leaving me with
pam.conf.rpmsave -> pam.conf.rpmsave and my working conf file in
oblivion. Ouch! My fault, maybe, but also an rpm bug.

What could be causing this? Do I really have to understand PAM? Is this a
FAQ?

I guess this goes under the category of a failed upgrade.

doug.
