I had exactly the same problem. It vanished when I inserted my hostname
into /etc/news/hosts.nntp.
Therefore, I suggest you put a line

merlin.spconnect.com:

at the end of your /etc/news/hosts.nntp file, after all the comment
lines. Issue an '/etc/rc.d/init.d/news stop' before editing this
file, then an '/etc/rc.d/init.d/news start' to restart INN.
Be sure to have the new edited file owned by user news and group
news.
