Guess #1: Are you sure you have everything necessary to
run ppp enabled when you recompile your kernel?

#2: Are you by any accident running 2.0.x kernel with an old
ppp package? What does " rpm -qf `whereis pppd` " say?
Should be ppp-2.2.0f-1 or later.
