RPM cannot open packages.rpm

Trying to install a rpm I get the message
"cannot open //var/lib/rpm/packages.rpm"
I do have a /var/lib/... .rpm, but nothing with to slashes in front
of it. And, eh, I did upgrade to rpm-2.2.2-1 . Did I corrupt my
rpm-database?
