Connecting to ISP using chat

I setup PPP chat script through the control panel which create a file =
called chat-ppp0 in the following directory
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/
I tried to use that with chat by issuing the following command:
chat -V -f chat-ppp0
and I get the following without connection
ATZ
which is just the command to initialize the modem.
Anyone knows how to use chat with this script.
I have been trying to learn Linux for the past 2 months and I have not =
been able to connect to the internet Can you believe that!!!!!!
