Actually, statically linked or not, still the same,
I tried both static and dynamic versions of Nedit,
Mosaic and xftp, the same thing. If I launch another
X program which is not motif based but of a similar
functionality, the latter takes a shorter period
of time to appear on my screen, and the difference
is pretty big: like let's say, 2 and 6 seconds. Let's
for example, take Nedit and Xemacs: Xemacs is capable
of much more than Nedit but it appear pretty fast (3 secs),
especially if cached. Nedit doesn't care if it's cached
or has to be read from HD, it takes about the same 5-6
seconds for it to launch; or take Netscape and Mosaic:
Netscape is capable of much more and executes pretty
fast and is more responsive than Mosaic. When launching
any Motif based applications, I always see the upper bar on
Xosview going all blue and red for quite a while. More
examples: xmcd - 5 seconds and xplaycd - 1 second, xmmix -
6 seconds and xmixer - 1 second. It's pretty consistent.
