I think that you might also be able to get the machine to boot you
straight to a prompt if you boot it up sinlge.  To do this, you just
reboot the machine, and when you get to the lilo prompt, stop it, and
instead of typeing "linux", type "linux single".... I think this should
bring you up to a prompt in sh (note, no need to log in).. I'm not totally
sure that it dumps you in sh though.. It might try to dump you into bash,
in which case, this idea is foo.. but you could always just grab bash,
grab a emergency recovery disk (anything that can mount ext2 partitions
should work.. and put the old copy back....
