Java installation problems

I am runnining RH 3.0.3 with the 2.0.20 kernel and rpm 2.2.7. I installed the
linux.jdk.shared-1.0.2-2.i386.rpm and I am still having problems getting it to work.
I followed the installation instructions ie making the necessary changes for redhat.
When I try "appletviewer example1.html" I get the following error message
Invalid JAVA_HOME: /home/usr/local
even though I replaced the line in the appletviewer script with JAVA_HOME=/home/usr/local/java
Also, in the make xconfig menu, the line for compiling Java support into the kernel is grayed
out and hence unavailable.
I'd appreciate any help on this.
