yep, that works, thanks!

now I see that in 3.0.3, the eval `dircolors` was aliasing 'ls'
to '/usr/bin/color-ls $LS_OPTIONS', and setting LS_OPTIONS
to '--8bit --color=tty' but that seems to have disappeared.

there's no mention of the 'auto' option in the ls man page,
only options listed are yes, no, and tty.
