starting apache from control panel

Am I alone with this (in Colgate): I cannot start httpd from control panel.
In the control panel, I select the runlevel editor. Then I select from
Available httpd.init. Stopping httpd is no problem. But when (after
stopping httpd) I select Execute - Start. The whole control Panel
hangs, it has to be killed. I also get a zombie httpd:
