I was happily running redhat 3.0.3 with a 2.0.1 kernel on a 486
with a 3C509B (IRQ=11) and an AH152x (IRQ=10) scsi card.

After upgrading to the 4.0 release and rebuilding the
kernel, the new kernel would not recognize the 509.

I re-configured and re-built several times, I'm satisfied
that the kernel that I was booting had 3C509 support.

Am currently running the old 2.0.1 kernel. Everything
seems to be working...
