INTERNET CONNECTION MADE EASY - for RedHat 5.1 and 5.2

It works exactly the same for any external modem
(ISDN or analog) or any internal analog modem.

Tested on RH 5.2, and RH 5.1 with
ALL rpms updated from updates.redhat.com

USE LINUXCONF, the "System Configuration" icon in /usr/bin/control-panel.

You don't really need to even look at any text files.

THE STEPS:

Run X Windows
Type 'linuxconf' without the quotes...

Control|Control Panel|Control Service Activity:
Enable at least inet, kerneld, network, portmap
    Leave others unchanged.

Config|Networking|Client Tasks|Routing and gateways:
Usually you don't have to do anything here.
Do not run routed for ppp.
Do not set any routes or default routes for ppp.

Config|Networking|Client Tasks|Nameserver Specification:
Set up at least one nameserver.
Use the ones from your ISP if you are not sure.

Config|Networking|Client Tasks|Host Name Search Path:
    Select "hosts,dns" - that's the default.

Config|Networking|Client Tasks|PPP/SLIP/PLIP:
     hit add,ppp,accept:
        1. TURN ON PAP - MOST ISPs USE IT!
        2. fill in 4 blanks including /dev/cuaX
     hit customize

     hardware tab:
        1. enable all except escape control characters
        2. in PPP options insert "noipx" (no quotes)
unless you're sure you need ipx

     communication tab:
        1. enable debug
        2. ERASE ALL EXPECT, SEND TEXT BOXES - IMPORTANT

    networking tab:
        1. enable 'default route' and 'restart link',
        2. disable 'escape ctrl chars'
        3. 'no connection'=5,
        4. other text boxes are empty

    PAP tab:
        Note: secret means ISP password.

Hit accept, save, ok, ... at each level to save
    everything and exit linuxconf.

How to start and stop your connection:

/sbin/ifup ppp0
/sbin/ifdown ppp0

Or, install the 'usernet' rpm from the RH CD.
The usernet command gives you pushbuttons if
you don't like to type the ifup/ifdown commands.

Comments and corrections welcome!
