Hi, I'm running (still) 4.2 and working nicely, but these days it's
getting to where you need 5.x to use the new rpms and so forth. I use
KDE, but I have the source for that, but much of the rest is reasonably
standard 4.2. I have a / /usr and /usr/local partition (home is on / at
the moment) with / and /usr having about 30% free space. /usr/local is
pretty full, but I can remove Netscape and wine and so forth if I need
to.
Any hints as to how 'bad' the upgrade is from 4.2 to 5.2, or should I
clean up a spare partition (or add a new drive) and try 5.2 there. This
is a single user workstation, but it is my primary box that does the
work on the farm (but it don't matter if it goes down for a few days). I
can back up key data to an archive partition, so no problem there. Do I
need to back up /etc as well.
I have a few compiled apps like kde, lyx (and xforms) gimp, wine, and
various things. I guess they will/may need recompiling. Used for dial up
internet conection, no network, fairly linux friendly hardware (S3
video) ...
Any pitfalls to look out for?
Any hope that Staroffice 4 will work afterwards :-)
BTW 5.2 is being supplied here in Oz at the moment by the APC magazine
(Australian Personal Computer) with their Linux Pocketbook. It's the
complete (free) version of 5.2, apparently and selling for $14.95 with
their pocketbook (which is cheap for my part of the world) $10 extra if
you want the source CD burned on demand. Does anyone know anything about
this particular RH release as it seems to have been slightly customized
by APC.
thanks,
tim
