I have just installed RH 5.2, from a CD-ROM attached to an Italian
magazine, without any problem. I should like to become familiar with
Linux (I'm not afraid of technicalities as I have been a system
programmer for 30 years) but I fear a repeat of the experience I had
with Coherent a few years ago: I stopped using it simply because I
got bored with having to use MicroEmacs for editing (I didn't even
consider using the Vi clone, Elvis).

Ever since I got my first PC in 1984 (the wonderful, for the time,
DEC Professional) I have been used to keypad editing, first with EDT
and then, in DOS (I now run Novell Dos7; I use Windows 3.1 only when
I can't help it), with Brief, for which I have written quite a few
macros. So now I'm looking for something similar to use under Linux.

I have read about Crisp, but I have no intention of parting with $100
just to get an editor, having got the whole OS for $5. I have the
source for ED (the EDT clone by Rush Record) and I could try compiling
it under Linux, but I would of course prefer to get a ready-to-run
editor; besides, ED isn't really programmable. Does anybody know
where I could find a free (or very cheap) (EDT|Brief)-like editor?

I also have a nontechnical question. I find the list interesting,
but the traffic is very heavy. This is not normally a problem, but
sometimes I'm unable to access e-mail for a week or so and I cannot
allow thousands of unread messages to accumulate on my provider's
server. Is there a mechanism for suspending/restarting mail from
the list without having to unsubscribe/re-subscribe, something like
listserv's 'set nomail', 'set mail'? I have tried posting a query
to redhat-list-request with the subject starting with "Re:" but the
server just sent me the help file.
