Windows can't handle multiple   .   in a filename, so it makes it _tar
instead of .tar.gz.  What I do is to rename it to .tar instead of _tar then
do a tar -xvf *.tar and let it do it's thang.

Hell, mc locks my system up tighter than a...well....tight. <g>  So I can't
help with that one, I fear.

I'm not sure, but I do think that there is a problem with power management
and RH.  I might be wrong, so check with the errata and ask others.  Or test
it by turning off power management on your hardware.

What do I have to do to ensure I am using both CPUs and all available RAM?

What does  top  tell you about memory, how much you're using, available,
etc.?
