KDE or linux problem?

I have been trying to figure out this problem for several days to no
avail. I have posted to the kde mailing list as well as to a linux
newsgroup, also to no avail.

Several days ago I transfered my RH 5.1 installation from a 2.5 gig hdd
to a 4.2 gig hdd. I did this by disconnecting my CDROM (slave on
secondary IDE controller) and plugging in the 4.2 gig and then editing
fstab to accomodate the change. I fdisked it, and partitioned it the
same way I did the 2.5 gig only with larger partitions. Basically it
sits as follows on hdb:

hdb5 /
hdb6 swap
hdb7 /usr
hdb8 /usr/local
hdb9 /home
hdb10 /tmp

When I copied my installation over to the new drive, I mirrored this
layout on hdd. I ran "cp -avx <source> <target> for each appropriate
mountpoint. At this time, I have removed the old 2.5 gig and replaced it
at hdb with the 4.5 gig and linux is working. I can bootup linux and I
can start enlightenment or window maker with no problems. I can also run
all the apps that I have tried thus far...except KDE. I have found that
I can run KDE as root, no problems at all, but as a user, it wont go.

This is a copy of a post I made to the KDE list - I wonder if this is not
really a non-KDE-related problem that is actually a problem somewhere in
my linux install:

Subject: More on KDE problems after hdd copy

OK...I still cannot get kde to run as a user but have NO problems as root.

I checked permissions for pertinent directories and files and seems OK.

I can run Enlightenment and Windowmaker with no problems at all for root
or users. As a user running either wm I can even start and run kvt and
kedit. I can start to run kppp but it locks up upon connecting and the
ONLY way I have found to eliminate it is via kill -9 PID. This happens
every time as a user running kppp under enlightenment or wmaker.

Root can run kde without problems. All functions and apps work fine.

I have kdebase-1.0.7 installed (along with all its sister files) as well
as qt-1.41. I HAD qt-1.40 installed before and had NO problems - until
after I copied my original linux hdd to a new hdd. I had hoped that
upgrading my kde installation and qt with the latest kde rpms and qt rpm
would correct whatever is wrong...it didn't.

I am running kdm again and logged in as a user and selected failsafe. In
the failsafe xterm window I entered "startx >& ~/.Xerrors" and kde TRIED
to start. The screen came up, the panel came up...but no folder icons
and no functioning buttons just as before. I exited and then logged in
again and this time started enlightenment. I started kedit and opened up
.Xerrors to see what was there:

Fatal server error:

Server is already active for display 0
If server is no longer running remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again

--some normal kde stuff...normal and ok but then for each app I tried to
start:

ERROR: KFM CRASHED
KFM NOT READY
ERROR: KFM CRASHED
KFM NOT READY
...etc

OK, so I deleted /tmp/.X0-lock (using kvt), logged out of enlightenment
and then logged in again and started failsafe. I entered "startx >&
~/.Xerrors" again in the terminal window and kde tried to start again
with the same result. No folders, no functional app buttons.

I exited again, logged in again and started enlightenment. I then
started kedit again and opened up .Xerrors:

_XSERVTransSocketINETCreateListener:...SocketCreateListener()failed
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListener: server already running

Fatal server error:
Cannot establish any listening sockets - make sure an X server isn't
 already running

---then a series of KFM CRASHED KFM NOT READY messages for each app
button I selected.

So...does this help? I am not sure what is going on...what other X
server might be running or where to look or what file to edit.

PLEASE help me with this...it is driving me nuts...

Also...any ideas as to why kppp would lockup upon connection?

The thing that really bugs me is that I even uninstalled kde before and
then installed again but it didn't correct the problems. I did NOT have
this problem at all the first time I installed kde. It worked right off.
