HP DAT24 .. used DAT for the past 5-6 years never had problems.

How much data do you want to bk and are you going to retrieve files often.

For sure use a tape device .. no "high" capacity removable drives (like syjets)
.
So get a tape device that will be able to bk all your machines.

Possible free soft are afio, cpio, tar, dump, amanda, taper ...
$ option could be bru, ctar, lonetar, arkiea ...

TAR can be dangerous, if there is a error when retrieving it will stop on the
error and you will loose whatever data after that point on the tape. I used it
for 2 years without problems, until I was told it was risky.

AFIO, CPIO seem to be good choices
DUMP .. don't know.
AMANDA .. complicate for small network like yours, but then you may like it.
TAPER .. easy, graphic interface, don't remember the format tar or afio ? ..
but no good for 20Gig bakup, I tried.

CTAR, LONETAR are the same and I "think" do not have the same problem TAR as ..
but CTAR does not have "very" Long Pathname Support. If a pathname is more than
200-300 (I think) caricatures it will not backup that file.

BRU what I used for the moment, kind of okay .. but if you want to retrieve one
file from a 20Gig DAT .. it's very long. Then you may have the same problems
with the others, I don't know. I only know that for TAR there as a nice Index
builder software call "dds2tar".

ARKIEA .. I will let you know in a day or two, I'm just trying it right now.
So far .. I hope it as a command line option for retrieving, because for the
moment I only saw a X interface.

You may also have a look at QuickStart from the maker of BRU .. it make a image
of your disk on another disk or tape .. just like GHOST or Power Quest for DOS.

I can tell you GHOST is amazing .. but don't know if it will make a image of a
Linux partition.
QuickStart on the other had can "image" win95/NT/Netware/OS2/Linux/SCO...
To rebuild a server from a Hardisk crash I guess it's a must .. In my case I
rather RAID.

cheers,
Alain
