I blew up portmap & nfs

Aaargh!
While working on a complete crash recovery procedure, I managed to blow up
portmap & nfs, seemingly beyond all hope. I did a complete restore across
the wire (the tape drive is on another machine) using NFS and although the
restore went as planned, NFS now refuses to start on boot or otherwise.
Portmap starts ok, but it gets ugly when rpc.mountd & rpc.nfsd try to start:
rpc.mountd Cannot register service: RPC: Unable to receive; errno=
Connection refused
rpc.nfsd Cannon register service: RPC: Unable to receive; errno= Connection
refused
The messages is /var/log/messages look like this:
mountd[579]: unable to register (mountd, 1, udp)
nfsd[587]: unable to register (nfsd, 2, udp)
After this happens portmap bombs and has to be restarted as well.
Originally I thought the version of portmap and/or nfs-server on tape was
different from the basic install I did to get NFS up & running for the
restore, so I uninstalled/reinstalled portmap & nfs-server to no avail.
Now I'm thinking there must be some "leftover" lock / status / whatever
files from portmap & nfs that I've missed. I've checked the usual places -
/var/lock/subsys & /var/run/ and I cleaned up /etc/rmtab, so what have I
missed?
