Well, for starters, there is not such thing as /dev/hd0.  The IDE
drives are:

primary master:  hda
primary slave:   hdb
secondary master: hdc
secondary slave: hdd

and so on.  As for nothing in the /dev directory, try the above
numbers and if no luck, use the makedev command.
