I had this exact problem also. It came down to 2 problems:
1) You need to get the Samba source and compile a new smbmount, smbmnt &
smbumount. Make sure you are running a 2.1.x kernel and have the lib dirs
correct (usually this means you should have /usr/src/linux a "link to" or
dir with the 2.1.x source.
2) the syntax to smbmount has changed, so be sure to read the new man pages.
