Hi,

I've recently installed RedHat 5.2. I want to work with ipchains so I
also installed the kernel sources in preparation for patching. My
goal was to first make the distributed kernel out of the source in
the Red Hat 5.2 distribution before applying any patches. The
distribution pre made and installed kernel in /boot is named:
vmlinuz-2.0.36-0.7, the kernel I created from the source from the
5.2 distribution is called vmlinuz-2.0.36.

What is the -0.7?

At this url: http://www.redhat.com/linux_what.phtml Redhat says:
"... Red Hat Linux is shipped with the exact source
code used to make the operating system. ..." I'm just curious
about the 0.7 and if I'm missing a few little bug patchs or ??

On the cdrom in /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS I found the following
files:
kernel-2.0.36-0.7.i386.rpm
kernel-pcmcia-cs-2.0.36-0.7.i386.rpm
kernel-headers-2.0.36-0.7.i386.rpm
kernel-source-2.0.36-0.7.i386.rpm
kernel-ibcs-2.0.36-0.7.i386.rpm
kernelcfg-0.5-3.i386.rpm

I did a rpm -qpl on the source to verify that they are installed in
/usr/src/linux-2.0.36 even though the .rpm is named 2.0.36-0.7. The
kernel-2.0.36-0.7.i386.rpm shows that the modules are loaded in
/lib/modules/2.0.36-0.7 which seems inconsistent with the kernel
source to me.
