I may be way off base here, since I haven't played with this stuff in a long
while, and just got my new laptop's X working today, but..
I have a setting
Section "Screen"
SubSection "Display"
Depth 8
...
EndSubSection
...
EndSection
that I believe controls this. Try setting Depth to 32 (in all Display
subsections)
