RH 5.1: X starts with wrong color depth

I'm running RH 5.1 and /etc/X11/XF86Config has the line,
"DefaultColorDepth 32" in each screen section. However, when I use startx
(by itself), X comes up in 8 bpp mode. Despite the default statement in the
config file, I have to invoke startx -- -bpp 32 to get that depth.
Has anyone an idea of what I'm doing wrong? The config file certainly
looks OK to us.
