Try it without the "p" flag.  That flag keep the same user, group, and
permissions it was archived with. Obviously if it was
644 bozo  user  bigballoftar.gz
You might not have bozo as a user on you system on your system so
tar chokes on the file.

do it as
tar xfvz bigballoftar.gz
and see if you still have the problem.
