I installed Red Hat 5.2 about a month ago, and other than not being able to
install from a dos drive and having to buy the cd I didn't have many problems.
The installed went fairly well, I just wasn't able to install lilo on the
hard-drive like I wanted, but I'm satisfied with the boot disk. I have
installed X-Windows, and KDE and I love it. It is configurable, and very
stable. I just love the stablility compared to windows. However, I can't
stick with an OS if I can't run programs, and that's just my problem. I can't
compile, or run most popular programs. I don't know if I have
something configured wrong, or it's because of the glibc6 based system.

Please provide me with any information...I've been working with this problem
for two weeks.

 Examples:
Xirc
-------------------------------------------
Tar gives me the following error:
logged in as root
I use tar xfvzp xirc-2.2p1.tar.gz
and on every file extracted I get the error
"tar: xIrc-2.2p1/xIrcSocket.h: Cannot chown to uid 205 gid 1000: Operation not
permitted"
Then it exits with "tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors"

Then I go to compile xirc and I get the errors:
I type make
gcc: installation problem, cannot exec 'cc1plus':
make[1]: *** [xApp.o] Error 1
make: *** [LibX++.a] Error 2
--------------------------------------------
Xplorer
--------------------------------------------
I installed the xplorer rpm
I enter the /usr/local/bin directory logged in as root
I type xplorer to execute the program and I get the following error
xplorer: can't resolve symbol '_vt.6QFrame'
--------------------------------------------
tar
--------------------------------------------
as you see above, I get the error "cannot chown to" even though
I'm logged in as root...I would really appreciate any help on this
annoying problem
--------------------------------------------

That isn't the half of the programs that won't work....if I can get passed
this problem, then I think I can be a happy Linuxer and go on to be
a pillar of the Linux Community :)

Thanks,

TripKill
