Hello,

I just added an IBM Deskstar 16.8G hard drive to my Linux box. While I was
doing this, I decided to shift drives around. My original configuration
was:

hda1(root) hda2(38 Meg swap): 407MB HD (Boot and /)
hdb1 4.3G HD (mounted as /home/ftp/pub)

My new configuration is:

hda1 (root) hda2(38 Meg swap) : 4.3G HD (Boot and /)
hdb2 16.8G HD (mounted as /files)

Usually, I put LILO in the MBR since it seems to work well from there. But,
to support my new HD to it's full capacity, I needed to install the IBM
Dynamic Drive overlay. Since my BIOS won't recognize this new drive beyond
8G, I needed to set BIOS to look at the drive as a 1024 Cyl 16 Head 63
Sector drive. The overlay then loads from the boot drive's MBR at boot time
and translates the drive's geometry. Great, except that I can't put LILO in
the MBR now. I put LILO in the boot partition, but it didn't work. (I have
NEVER gotten it to work from the boot partition) To start my system , I
need to use a boot floppy now. :( :( :( Anyone ever experience this
before and have any pointers? It must be possible to have LILO boot from
the boot partition. If I do try to boot from HD I get the following
message:

FA:

That's it. VERY informative, isn't it. I am guessing this is coming from
the overlay and not LILO. If I press enter or try to type anything, I just
get more "FA:" messages.

As an aside, when I went to CompUSA to buy the largest HD I could afford, I
was going to get a Maxtor since they were cheap. I already have quite a few
Maxtors and they are great. But, I noticed that all of the really large
drives from Maxtor seem to "require Windows". Are these "Windrives"???
This is REALLY bogus, if it's true. My only other choices were Western
Digital (I've had many problems with these) and IBM. So I went with the
IBM... it was cheaper than the like sized Western Digital too.
