1. Make sure that your email program in Linux works.
2. Copy your folders over to Linux, eitehr by FTP, NFS, or just
plain sneakernet (floppy). If its the same computer, you can
also mount the DOS partition under Linux and copy them over.
3. The vast majority of email folders and spools are readable
by Linux. For example, Linux Netscape reads Windows Netscape
folders just fine. Also, Pine, Exmh and others are also
compatible.
Basically there are TWO kinds of mail folders. In one, which is
the most typical, ALL the messages on that folder are just one
big file. When a new message is added, it is appended to the file
to make it larger. Many mailers, like Netscape, will generate
an "index" file so it knows which message is which inside the
folder. However, this file is generated on the fly and does not
need to be moved over.
The other type is where each message is a separate file. This
consumes vast amount of disk space and is not much used nowadays.
However, you can concatenate the files into one big one for use
in other mail programs. 'cat file1 file2 file3 file4 > bigfile'
will create a concatenated folder called 'bigfile'.
I doubt very much that Outlook Express has this sort of file
structure.
There is also the possibility that you will encounter a mailer
with proprietary formatting for files, such as rich text, HTML,
or .DOC format. If that is the case you may need to use a word
processor to export the file in ASCII text, or use the mailer
to forward the individual mails to a normal mail program. Bummer.
Just experiment a bit with a COPY of the folder involved and you
should be all right.
