There is at least one example where Netscape didn't give hoot about the
standard. That was back in the HTML 2.0 days, when Netscape introduced the
<center></center> tag which was not part of HTML 2.0 (it was included in
HTML 3.2 later) - the sad thing about this is that that tag is completely
obsolete, as there was already <div align="center"></div> which did the
same.
BTW: Frames were not part of HTML 3.2, either... ...and there a few
extensions/attributes to the <table> tag and <a img=...> tags that are not
in HTML 3.2. The other non-standard thing is the wrong placement of tags
(interleaving instead of treating them as containers), which can really
throw off other browsers and tools (e.g. html2ps, which is an *excellent*
tool - I use HTML + html2ps as a kind of "LaTeX light" here at work, as we
don't have "the real thing" on the system).
If you want to have a look for yourself, you can check out the HTML 3.2
standard at: http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html32.html
The HTML 4.0 standard can be found at: http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/
All the best,
Thomas
