they can work without it, but they have a nasty habit of disabling their
floppy drives... and then, if you've deleted the partition, you are stuck
with a NASTY catch-22, especially since the install partition floppies will
not install unless you are installing on a actual compaq 4000.... it's
baaaaaad. What the partition stores, AFAIK, is just the CMOS setup program
and possibly some configuration data.
