This partition is not the CMOS. The partition called the System Partition.
On desktop Compaqs this is preconfigured from the factory. On Compaq
servers, this is created by the SmartStart installation utility.
This software here allows you to change values in CMOS as well as add and
remove hardware. If this partition poses a problem, then it can be removed,
and the system will be usable until a hardware or CMOS change is necessary.
If you have a server, you can run the System Configuration Utility from the
SmartStart CD. If you have a desktop, you can download the utility from the
website ( www.compaq,com ), and boot from a system configuration floppy.

The MBR is located at the start of the ACTIVE partition. This is the
partition that you boot from. The MBR on Compaqs is NOT on the System
Configuration Utility partition. Compaq computers have some sort of boot
manager in ROM that will boot from the NON-DOS partition when F10 is
pressed.
Is it possible to place LILO on the active partition, instead of letting it
have the first sector of the hard drive? Someone else will have to answer
that, as I have not yet tried it, but I think it should be possible...
