SPARQ ON LINUX TROUBLESHOOTING
Upgrade to at least RH5.1
+ 2.0.35 kernel
+ use a kernel from the rpm, or keep module support
+ all 5.1's other upgrades
Set your PC BIOS to have the most advanced mode
of parallel port. If you have troubles, try
less advanced modes. The standard one should
always work, but is not as fast. Be sure the
BIOS settings for the parallel port are the
standard, default ones.
Have kerneld running.
Note: these modules don't work when compiled into the kernel
Don't power on the Sparq and a printer on the same port.
Don't try to print while the SparQ is powered on.
Don't have the lp module loaded when you load paride, epat,pd,
and the reverse.
If there is a disk in the SparQ, wait for the 2 green lights
plus another 10 seconds before insmod pd or mounting.
Otherwise it will fail.
My script simply does this:
rmmod lp
insmod paride
insmod epat
insmod pd
mount -t vfat /dev/pda1 /sp
Another script does the opposite commands in reverse order.
Once all is working, you can install the 'eject'
rpm. To unmount and eject, run
# eject -u /dev/pda
You can put different filesystems on a SparQ drive,
and you can use fdisk on it. Be sure to zero out
the first 100 blocks of the partition before mke2fs,
otherwise windows will think it's vfat and trash it.
So many don'ts here, but it actually works great
once you know what it likes.
It's great for backups and for installing machines
that have no CD. Now I can use the SparQ with
Linux, DOS, W9X or NT.

Yes. Can't share the printer port. Printer port BIOS settings need
to be standard. May need to set 'standard serial port' rather than
advanced modes.
