xfstt was running.
What worked was following a friend's suggestion: make a backup of
XF86config, then force the re-installation of XFree86-* from the RH 5.1
distribution CD. After retarting xfstt, X booted again.
Phew! And a big thanks to Eric Harrison, recovering SysAdmin.
