Thanks to all who responded. I don't think it is a hardware issue,
as I rebooted and everything is working perfectly. I am no longer
getting those error messages when I try to mount the floppy.
Although, this is good news, I am still left wondering what happened
in the first place. I am running a SMP v2.0.35 kernel, so I'll have
to pass this around the smp list.
