I've had problems transfering large (20meg + ) files over samba, there seems to be overflow problems with buffers or something. This seems to happen with a few samba implementations including DEC Pathworks. Anyone else had this ?

You could use autofs (similar I believe to amd), to mount the ftp sites you specify (assuming they support NFS), and they'll appear seamless to your existing filesystem (in and out of KDE!!).
