I don't know about a package that can give you the connection speed, but
here's a couple other options:

usernet (comes with 5.2) gives you an easy toggle switch and lets you
know the status of the connection (up/down/negotiating connection).

kppp comes with KDE, if you're interested, and gives you the same info
including (if I remember correctly) the duration of the connection. If
you run KDE's panel app, kppp can be swallowed by the panel, giving you
a couple of lights to show incoming/outgoing packets (a la WinXX's
Dial-Up Networking).

With Afterstep there is an app called asmodem (comes with the standard
release of it) that purports to do the same thing. I've had problems
getting it to compile, though.

Hope this helps,

DFL
