When the computer is booted up (power on), the LIGHT on the
floppy drive should come on briefly, maybe 3-4 seconds,
somewhere along the line. It is part of POST (Power-On
Self-Test). If you never see the light come on, then you
have a hardware failure (drive, cable, floppy controller).
OR-- and this is important -- you have disabled the floppy
TEST or the FLOPPY entirely in the BIOS.
I am sitting here in front of a Digital 3500 ST which BIOS
has just those BIOS settings options. Mine were not disabled,
but I can see how it could happen. Look around.
While Linux does not use the BIOS per se, there are a few
things you need to know about BIOS and Linux. And one of
them is that a lot of hardware switches etc. like disablings,
are done in BIOS. If the hardware is disconnected, then
Linux (or Win95) can't connect it for you either. In the
case of drives; ie, floppy and hard drive, Linux gets a
lot of data on them from the BIOS at bootup time. Always
make sure your BIOS is correct.
