I think I can (to some extent) answer your non-question.
with the proliferation of virii, trojans, hoax virii/trojans, etc on the
Internet since the "explosion" several years ago, many users, executives,
and even administrators have become absolutely paranoid (and rightly so)
about downloading software, even for testing/evaluation, if the ultimate
intent is to eventually use it on a critical system. And generally, the
lower the cost of implementation when inversely compared to the expected
return the higher they "worry level" associated. (i.e. the cheaper
something is, the higher the paranoia level, and the paranoia level gets
even higher if the software in question is high-end or high-powered.)
OSS has by far the highest "paranoia factor" because it's generally free
(can't get much cheaper than that) and can be re-written and recompiled if
it doesn't quite do EXACTLY what you want (can't get much more "powerful"
than that, either.)
While most, if not all, of us on this list will agree that we generally
don't have a problem using free, powerful, OSS, the majority of users around
the world had no problems using PKware's PKZip package, either. Until, of
course, the trojan incident in '95 with the "release" of the PKZ205 trojan.
This is when the majority of users discovered that the safest bet is usually
to go directly to the publisher to download their software.
In a nutshell, there are plenty of users that are skeptical as to exactly
how "trustworthy" a "trusted mirror" really is. Think about it. How would
YOU like to download an RPM from a "mirror" or an independent Linux archive,
install it, and later discover that you had inadvertantly installed a
rootkit??
