There is a dockit app called wmppp that Monitors throughput, connection, and disconnection.  Not sure if you need WMaker installed though to run it.  It still requires the ppp-on, ppp-of, and ifdown scripts to work.  But it does come with getmodemspeed to get the modem speed (wow couldnt have figured that one on your own ey :).  Its small, which makes is nice to have on the Desktop.
