From what I have heard, Windows 95 HATES not being on the
first partition of hda1. Have you considered installing
DOS/Win 3 onto your free partition on hdb, I'm sure that
would be far easier. The steps here would then simply be
1. In Linux, use fdisk to make your free partition a DOS
one.
2. Boot from disk 1 of the MSDOS disk.
3. Exit the install program (press F3 twice), DO NOT run
the install program as it will try to install to drive C:
4. Format drive D: (Your free partition, being the only
other partition DOS can see, should be at this letter)
5. Type SYS D:, this will place the system files onto Drive
D:.
6. Put in a minimal autoexec.bat and config.sys
7. Boot back to Linux and edit Lilo's configuration to add
the new partition to the boot list (I forget the exact
syntax but it's pretty clear from the existing entries).
8. Boot to your new DOS setup, put the MSDOS disk 1 in
the floppy drive, switch to drive A: and run SETUP (this
saves you having to manually 'expand' and set up the DOS
utilities etc).
You now have a DOS system you can boot to and then install
Windows 3.11
Another good reason for doing this is that Win 3 requires
far less space than Win95 and I'm betting that your free
partition is smaller than your primary hard disk.
