I've made some progress, but am still having problems. I used the RH 5.0
diskettes to boot instead of the Partition Magic rescue disks. I mounted
my root partition /hda5 using:
mount -t ext2 /dev/hda5 /mnt
I then tried changing to the /boot directory (where vmlinuz resides) and
typing:
rdev vmlinuz /dev/hda5
and
rdev -s mvlinuz /dev/hda9
I got messages that it didn't know what rdev was. What the heck, I
decided, and typed:
lilo -r /mnt
This time it worked.
I then rebooted and saw an error when Linux tried to mount my FAT 32
partition saying that it wasn't a recognized file system type I tried it
manually with the same result:
[root@localhost /root]# mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /win95
mount: fs type vfat
not supported by kernel
However, when I logout I see:
Red Hat Linux
release 5.0 (Hurricane)
Kernel 2.0.34 on an i586
localhost login:
root
Password:
Last login: Thu Nov 19 22:57:37 on tty1
You have new
mail.
I think that this has something to do with my having upgraded my
kernel from 2.0.32 as originally came with RH 5.0, but the fact that my
version of lilo is 5.0 Previously, I had run 2.0.34 for several months
with no problems.
My problems originally started when I tried downloading installing the
errata for 5.0. This screwed up minicom and ppp on my computer (I could no
longer get online in Linux). I then decided I'd try to install RH 5.1
which came bundled with Linux Unleashed by Tim Parker. Since I was running
short on disk space I decided to repartition using Partition Magic 4.0.
This LILO problems started.
Since I've gotten Linux to boot I've tried upgrading my system to 5.1.
The installation CD-ROM searches for my current installation and gives the
message "mount failed invalid argument" several times before showing me the
following list of partitions to choose my root partition from:
Size
/dev/hda6 256977
/dev/hda7 1232248
/dev/hda8 272128
/dev/hda9 158728
/dev/hda11 151168
However, these device names aren't correct. When I reboot into Linux
normally and type df at the prompt I see:
Filesystem 1024-blocks Used Available Capacity Mounted
on
/dev/hda5 248912 118615 120018 50% /
/dev/hda10
146588 33055 108998 23% /home
/dev/hda6 1192383
531717 599054 47% /usr
/dev/hda7 263287 113454

/dev/hda8 153667 26328 119403
18% /usr/src
/dev/fd0 1423 671 752 47% /mnt
( /dev/hda9 is my swap partition)
Any help would be appreciated.
