Good news to everyone
DOOM for OS/2 + DIVE is out
Introduction
============
DOOM is a game developed by ID Software, Inc. It's the successor of
Wolfenstein-3d, and it's a three-dimensional action game, with a simple
argument line: kill everything you see, take everything you can and find the
exit.
DOOM saw the light under the MS-DOS operating system. Since that first
release, more versions have come to the market -- some for different
operating systems and even some for consoles.
Now ID Software has released the whole Linux source code, giving us all the
opportunity to adapt it to our favourite environments and machines,
optimizing and improving it.
"DOOM for DIVE" is an OS/2 native version, entirely developed with the EMX
development kit (a freeware product, available in many ftp sites). DOOM for
DIVE is a program that makes use of OS/2 multithreading capabilities, easy
of programming the PM window environment, and the incredible power of the
DIVE (Direct Video Interface) library.
Apart from this version, there exists other one that makes use of the
XFreeOS/2 window environment, available for ftp-ing at
ftp://set.gmd.de/pub/misc/XFree86OS2/ports
Features
========
Only a few:
+No sound support -- I'm still trying to get Dr.Holger's code up and
running.
+No mouse support. I may implement it soon, but sure it will not be as
Doom's original one.
+You can resize the window to almost any shape, but x1 and x2 zooms are the
ones that run faster.
+You can kill the program, either with the SHIFT+F12 keys, or from the
Window List, or with any "program killer", such as YAP or PMKILL. In this
sense the program seems not to cause much trouble.
+ Now the keyboard scanner is a bit smarter -- ALT and SHIFT keys get no
longer locked --. The problem only persists with the CTRL key -- if the
window loses focus while it's pressed, the game keeps firing until you
return to the window and press CTRL again. Not such a big problem, I think.
+ This is DOOM version 1.10. Old wad files may not work with it.
