---------------------------------------------------------------------
When IBM introduces software products, it normally lists a "service period" of
two years. Often this standard service period gets extended. (For example,
the service period for OS/2 Warp Version 3 ends at the end of September, 1997.
That service period had previously been extended.)
This announcement helps answer the question, "If I install an OS/2 Warp
Version 4 product today, how long can I expect IBM to officially support that
version?" It also helps address "Year 2000" concerns. However, because IBM
provides significant overlap between the introduction of a new version and the
end of the service period for a previous version, this announcement should not
be interpreted to mean anything in terms of version release schedules.
In short, this announcement means that IBM is backing the OS/2 Warp Version 4
product family with a generous service extension well into the next millenium.
Also, effective January 1, 1998, any *new* purchase of OS/2 Warp Version 4
automatically includes a "Use-Based Feature" giving you the right to connect
to and take advantage of OS/2 Warp Server Version 4 features. (A pricing
change also goes into effect January 1.) Here are the official details...
Service Extension: OS/2 Warp 4 and OS/2 Warp Server Family;
Terms and Conditions Change for OS/2 Warp 4
Marketing Announcement
August 26, 1997
Announcement Letter Number: 397-143
Abstract
Overview
In recognition of customers' need for well-planned and reliable rollouts of
their solutions, IBM is extending service and support for OS/2 (R) Warp 4 and
the OS/2 Warp Server family until December 31, 2000. This action will enable
you to better manage the introduction of version upgrades, new technology, and
Year 2000 readiness into your environments.
In addition to the extension of service, IBM is simplifying the terms and
conditions associated with access to the OS/2 Warp Server Version 4 family.
Effective January 1, 1998, the purchase of an OS/2 Warp 4 license will allow
you to access the chargeable services of the OS/2 Warp Server Version 4 family
at no additional charge.
Customer service and support, detailed in the documentation for the following
products, is extended until December 31, 2000.
OS/2 Warp 4
OS/2 Warp Server, Version 4
OS/2 Warp Server Advanced, Version 4
OS/2 Warp Server Advanced, Version 4 with SMP Feature
OS/2 Warp Server FirstStep
For a detailed listing of the program product part numbers affected by the
service extension, refer to the OS/2 Warp 4 and OS/2 Warp Server Family
Product Listing in the Description section.
Terms and conditions for OS/2 Warp 4 change on January 1, 1998. Each OS/2 Warp
4 license acquired on or after January 1, 1998, includes the right to access
the chargeable services of any OS/2 Warp Server, Version 4 or OS/2 Warp Server
Advanced, Version 4 in your enterprise from the OS/2 Warp 4 licensed
workstation.
OS/2 Warp 4 licenses acquired before January 1, 1998, do not include no-charge
access to OS/2 Warp Server. You must purchase an OS/2 Warp Server Use-Based
Feature when using an OS/2 Warp 4 licensed workstation to access the
chargeable services of OS/2 Warp Server if the OS/2 Warp 4 license was
purchased before January 1, 1998.
