Lotus Ships Domino 4.5 Server and Notes 4.5 Client Delivers First Groupware
and E-mail Server for the 'Net

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Dec. 12, 1996 - Lotus Development Corp. today
announced the shipment of its Domino 4.5 server (Domino 4.5) and the
Notes 4.5 client (Notes 4.5), which represent the market leading
solution for messaging, groupware and collaborative Web applications.
Domino 4.5 provides a new level of functionality for creating
groupware applications for the Internet and corporate intranets that
are accessible via Web browsers or Notes 4.5 clients. Domino 4.5 is
the only solution that delivers to Web browser users powerful
groupware applications for business activities, including human
resources, customer support and sales support. The Notes 4.5 client
further improves productivity by taking maximum advantage of the
Domino 4.5 groupware, messaging and security features.

"Organizations now have the capability to transform their intranets
from static publishing to full-fledged business applications that
will enable them to derive a real competitive advantage," said Jeff
Papows, president, Lotus Development. "No other vendor can match the
class of application made possible by Domino. As the leader in
groupware it is only natural that we deliver the first 'killer
intranet app.' Organizations can now unleash the potential that
intranets have promised, but previously not delivered."

Enhancements Create Sole Solution for Rapid Internet/Intranet Development

Domino 4.5 extends the ability of users to conduct business on the
Web through enhancements in key areas such as messaging, scalability,
manageability and security, in addition to support of Internet
standards such as HTTP, POP3, SMTP, and SSL 2.0. Domino 4.5 also
enables developers to rapidly design business applications for both
Web browsers and Notes clients, and seamlessly integrate those
applications with existing corporate systems. Some of these
enhancements include:

Domino.Action - A powerful set of easy-to-use tools to allow
users to create, populate and manage a Web site. Domino.Action
leverages the collaborative functionality of Domino to enable
and manage multi-site distributed authoring.

POP3 mail support - Enables e-mail access and storage for any
Internet POP3 mail client, such as QualComm's Eudora, or Lotus
cc:Mail.

SMTP MTA - A reliable, standards-based messaging backbone for
SMTP networks by extending native protocol and directory support
to the Lotus Domino 4.5 server.

Domino Advanced Services - Clustering and partitioning as well
as usage tracking and billing capabilities can be added to the
single processor or the SMP version of the Domino 4.5 server.
A complete list of enhancements to Domino 4.5 can be found in "What's
New in Notes and Domino 4.5: An Overview," located at
http://domino.lotus.com. The enhancements provide organizations with
the only server solution that can deliver collaborative groupware
applications capable of merging the power of existing corporate
systems with the open standards of the Internet and intranets.

"Loan requests require exceptional handling and security," said Phil
Usher, first vice president, groupware/IT division, Countrywide
Credit Industries, Inc., the nation's leading residential mortgage
lender and mortgage loan servicer. "When a customer submits a loan
application via our Web site, Domino insures that the application
moves quickly and effortlessly through the approval process. It also
allows us to track all requests from the application to the approval
stage and maintain the secure environment required by such
confidential information. We expect in the future that this will
allow us to significantly shorten the time required to take our
customers from wanting to get a loan to actually owning a home."

Notes 4.5 Client Combines Enhanced Web Support with Powerful Notes
Functionality

In conjunction with the Domino 4.5 server, Lotus also shipped the
Notes 4.5 client, to create the only integrated full-service intranet
client, providing support for the full range of activities in which
users engage daily. Enhancements to the Notes 4.5 client include:

Web browsing - Direct access to the Web and the ability to
retrieve and cache Web pages for off-line access. The Notes Web
browser supports HTML 3.2, Java applet execution, Netscape
Plug-ins, SSL and other key Internet standards.

Personal Web Navigator Database, including Web Agents - With the
ability to customize agents for the individual Web user who
needs to retrieve and effectively manage information retrieved
from the Internet. Page Minder is a background agent for
monitoring selected Web pages, with e-mail notification. Agents
can also refresh and reduce Web documents to maintain an optimal
Web database size for mobile use.

Group Calendaring and Scheduling - Calendaring & scheduling
functionality that is powerful and intuitive for the end user,
flexible for application developers and scalable to even the
largest enterprise. Enhancements include calendar views, easy
appointment and meeting creation, free time search and the
ability to view other people's calendars.
