IBM Announces Academic Version of OS/2 Warp 4
OS/2 Warp 4 Now Available to Students and Faculty at more than 60%
Savings
Austin, TX, December 16, 1996 . . . IBM today announced that OS/2*
Warp 4 is now available in a specially priced Academic Edition. The
OS/2 Warp 4 Academic Edition is available for purchase by faculty,
educational staff, or registered students of accredited or certified
post-secondary education institutions at qualifying college campuses,
bookstores and resellers.
Academic customers will receive the full-featured version of OS/2
Warp 4, including a new and improved graphical user interface, Sun
Microsystems' Java** technology and IBM VoiceType* speech recognition
software. In addition, OS/2 Warp 4 Academic Edition users will be
able to download, at no additional charge, Netscape Navigator*** 2.02
for OS/2.
The MSRP**** price for OS/2 Warp 4 Academic Edition is $99.00, versus
$249.00 for OS/2 Warp 4, which represents a 60 percent savings for
academic customers. "This price reduction will make it much easier
for academic institutions to upgrade or migrate to OS/2 Warp 4," said
Dr. Ingmar Prucha, professor of economics, University of Maryland.
"With OS/2 Warp 4 Academic Edition, IBM offers students and faculty
an easier, faster and inexpensive way to access and use the wealth of
information on the Internet," said Donn Atkins, vice president of
marketing for IBM's Personal Software Products division. "For
example, students can use Netscape Navigator for OS/2 to do on-line
research and them simply drag and drop that URL onto their desktop or
surf the Internet with voice commands."
The OS/2 Warp 4 Academic Edition is for both new users and users
upgrading from any previous version of OS/2. Certified
post-secondary educational institutions can purchase this version
from any Authorized IBM Academic Distributor, including Douglas
Stewart Co., NACSCORP (Nat'l Association College Stores), or Ingram.
End-users may also purchase OS/2 Warp 4 Academic Edition directly
from Indelible Blue, a certified OS/2 reseller. The purchaser is
required to present a current school/university/college ID at the
time of purchase.
